I love that idea of denial. I love the idea that people reject or hang on to something despite the overwhelming truth.

LOW LIFE
Nicolas Klotz, Elisabeth Perceval | France 2011 | 120 min | OV w/ EN subtitles

Thursday, October 26: 11.00 am - Urania

LOW LIFE is the film that announced a major rupture in the work of Nicolas Klotz and Elisabeth Perceval, leading them to uncover the poetic potentialities of fleeing society. It focuses on a group of students and asylum seekers as they bond over art, politics and solidarity while clashing with the blinding forces of the Anthropocene. Merging absolute rigour and mesmerising excess, with its characters echoing the melancholic drifters of Bresson and Garrel, the film confronted the law enforcement apparatus whose cynicism the duo had already targeted in their previous eforts; it then takes refuge in the realm of the night for the first time, where everybody is free. This is a true film about what it means to be young in dangerous times: its exclusive concerns are love and revolt, and the volatile drive which moves the heart into a state of intensity. More chilling than the panopticon itself and yet so generous in its desire to change the world, LOW LIFE ushered in a new, rawer creative phase for Klotz & Perceval. Poetry has never ceased to be the core of their cinema, yet after LOW LIFE it suddenly became more urgent, as if desperate to infiltrate the counter-images of a neglected people—the humanity of tomorrow. SOBRE TODO DE NOCHE
Victor Iriarte | Spain, France, Portugal 2023 | 105 min | OV w/ EN subtitles

Thursday, October 26: 8.15 pm - Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus

Víctor Iriarte’s debut feature is an exploration of tonal shifts and how they define cinema. The director playfully employs different film historical genres to tell the story of a mother who had to give up her son at birth, the other mother who adopted this same son and the son himself. The background to this plot is the estimated 300,000 newborn children who were abducted during and after the Franco regime. Starring iconic Spanish actresses Ana Torrent and Lola Dueñas, Iriarte’s film is set in the present, thus hinting at a possible way to go on, to find an answer to history. At first, the protagonists are connected through intricate yet isolated movements, linked by invisible threads which could lead anywhere. Later they meet and form a triangle of rare tenderness. The film oscillates between noir, political drama, road movie, melodrama, written correspondence and ghost story, thus questioning the accepted idea that a film’s quality depends on the extent to which you can trust where it’s going and what it’s doing. Yet trust emanates in spades from the two mothers and their son, proof that care and the possibility to narrate one’s own biography is a means to overcome violence and hopeless destinies. CAMPING DU LAC
Éléonore Saintagnan | Belgium, France 2023 | 69 min | OV w/ EN subtitles

Thursday, October 26: 4.00 Uhr - Urania

In her first feature, Éléonore Saintagnan draws on the mythological tales of rural France to craft an ecological fable where the imaginary permeates the real. Narrated in a novelistic first-person voiceover, the story begins when Éléonore—played by the director herself—sets out on the road, before her car breaks down in the middle of Brittany. She finds refuge at a lakeside campsite, home to both a secluded community and a miraculous fish, said to have lived in the lake since Biblical times. Fascinated by this tale and by the eccentric inhabitants, she begins to observe them and in so doing develops a new understanding of the world around her. But little by little, the peaceful lakeside atmosphere is disturbed when the fish becomes a tourist attraction. Working mainly with non-actors and using real locations, Saintagnan transforms reality into a playground of fantasy and storytelling, where temporalities and narratives both personal and collective intertwine. With tenderness, zany humor and a penchant for the absurd, CAMPING DU LAC drinks in the magic of things— including a shimmering folk musician—while casting a concerned eye on capitalist greed and our relationship to nature.
