One of the wonders that continually reveals itself in Martel’s films is the sudden appearance of what had previously remained invisible—an experience that compels recognition rather than merely offering it. Martel’s unique form of confrontation—uncompromising yet understood as necessary—with collective memory and its gaping wounds runs through her work. Fearless and sensual, as resolute as she is sensitive, she traces the very substance upon which “orders” have been constructed. Social, political, and ultimately personal systems whose fault lines must be persistently stretched. In conversation with Kathrin Resetarits, the focus will be on the practical, ethical, and intellectual methods required to “re-think” cinema as a critical form of engaging with the world—and, as so characteristic of Martel, to employ it equally as a poetic practice.

From Brussels, Lefto Early Bird has been blending genres in a unique way for over three decades. His sound unites jazz, electronica, techno, house, and hip-hop into a coherent whole. In radio shows on Kiosk Radio, The Lot, Worldwide FM, and NTS, he tells stories, connects listeners worldwide, and opens boundaries for new musical perspectives. As a curator, musician, and voice of the scene, he has had a lasting impact on the global music landscape. In their opening set, DIA mixes baile & Arab funk, rap, trance, gqom, bass, as well as Arabic and South Asian sounds.

On the occasion of her new film ALPHA, a conversation with Ducournau offers the opportunity to explore what can still be added to a reality already marked by unvarnished monstrosities. Fear as an aesthetic force, intimacy and the body within a context of mythological intensity—and the sheer pleasure in cinematic excess—may in the cinema of the “uncanny” serve as a portal to radical reflection.
