“Not enough to live on, too much to die for”: Franz is about to inherit his father’s farm, which lies south of Vienna. To get his head straight, he moves to the big city, where he meets Robert, a talented but selfdestructive rock singer who is the star of a discotheque on the outskirts. Robert’s girlfriend Christine is a dropout from Germany and also looking for something without quite knowing what it is: three drifters allowing life’s currents to take them. As Robert gets more and more involved with drugs, Franz and Christine have a fling—maybe it could work out between them? But Christine still has feelings for Robert, and their ménage à trois gets even more complicated when she finds out she’s pregnant and Robert tries to solve his problems with a gun. Soon the two young men are getting more and more involved in acts of violence… If you really want to know how it was in the 80s, you’d better watch ICH ODER DU. It portrays Vienna at its darkest and most unappealing—a place to run away from—and stars Hansi Lang, who was at the peak of his singing career at the time, a rock poet and rising star who brought his very own spin on New Wave to Austria and met a tragic end— unfortunately not unlike his character in the film.
