Throughout her career, British-Argentinian artist Jessica Sarah Rinland has incisively and provocatively examined the imbrication of the human and the natural world, particularly as mediated by institutions. In MONÓLOGO COLECTIVO, her second feature, she trains her ever-precise eye on Buenos Aires’ former municipal zoo and other regional animal parks in moments of flux, which includes the zoo’s major transformation into an “ecological attraction”. Rinland invokes contemporary social questions and debates about the implicit violence of the zoo, drawing relevant connections to their 19th century emergence within the context—at least in the Americas—of colonialism, conquest, exploitation and control. Shot on shimmering 16mm, MONÓLOGO COLECTIVO is at once quiet and focused while beautifully open in construction, a film that also revolves around interspecies connection as well as gender and labour. Slowly, deliberately, it not only gives space to the creatures housed in these spaces but also to the little seen and underappreciated humans whose lives are dedicated to their care. (Jesse Cumming)

DIRECT ACTION was shot in northwestern France at the headquarters of ZAD (“zone à défendre”, or “zone to defend”), a grassroots initiative established to combat a state-funded airport project. Since 2009, the members of ZAD have occupied the land as an anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian social experiment. While such narratives of resistance typically play out in a form of cinéma direct, Ben Russell and Guillaume Cailleau choose a seemingly more detached approach, capturing the numerous activities carried out in the collective, from subsistence farming to breadmaking and self-organisation, in 41 lengthy shots. But the choice of a durational form may not even be an aesthetic choice; it is simply the one that best expresses the polyvalency of ZAD. It is a movement that is not about temporary occupation, but building a sustainable future. It is a community brutally targeted by the state because it put private interests at risk. It is also a place of equality, where all work, including cinema, leads to political action. DIRECT ACTION is a long-term process, Russell has said. Despite the ZAD’s resounding victory, the struggle is never over, as shown in the infamous events of Sainte-Soline that the film leads to. (Antoine Thirion)

TEOCALLI is one of the most recent productions by Los Ingrávidos, whose ever-proliferating oeuvre is based on sampling and recycling techniques. The film will be presented at the Viennale with live music by Jung an Tagen; involving local musicians where their films are screened forms part of the collective’s collaborative practice. Drawing on the characteristic visual language employed by Los Ingrávidos, which involves remixing both their own film material and found footage, TEOCALLI thus contains excerpts from their films GUERRAS FLORIDAS, DANZA SOLAR, NAHUAL and various Super 8 home movies, as well as shots of a well-known mural by Diego Rivera which shows the history of Mexico and its numerous battles against foreign rule. Recurring, speaking elements include the eye as a marker of perception and puzzle pieces. The word Teocalli refers to an Aztec pyramid, a temple for religious rituals. While the ways in which Los Ingrávidos fragment and take apart the analogue material strive for a sense of trance in line with shamanic traditions, Jung an Tagen craft polyrhythmic, psychoacoustic and dissociative arrangements. Ritual and trance form the common denominator here—a synaesthetic firework display for the eyes and ears. (Daniela Zahlner, Dietmar Schwärzler)

The film EXERGUE – ON DOCUMENTA 14 by director Dimitris Athiridis follows curator Adam Szymczyk and his team during the preparation of the controversially received documenta 14. A unique look behind the scenes, he persistently asks uncomfortable questions about the dys/function of contemporary institutional art/world.
