In Liebe, Eure Hilde

Berlin, Summer 1942. Through friends, young Hilde Coppi enters the anti-Nazi resistance group known as the Red Orchestra. As a newcomer, she learns how to exchange radio messages with the Soviets and studies Morse code. She also falls in love with her fellow comrade Hans and gets pregnant not long before both are arrested by the Gestapo, with dreadful consequences. Although based on events that resonate with the present, Andreas Dresen’s IN LIEBE, EURE HILDE is not just a timely lesson in history. What starts as a familiar World War II period piece eventually turns into a pure, almost austere tragedy about moral beliefs and their cost. Dresen gradually zeros in on Hilde as someone who must lose everything to remain human and who accepts the experience of extreme loss and solitude as a matter of choice, not chance. The profound impact of this classical drama is carried by a subtle balance between the heroic, larger-than-life story and the intimacy of the acting and filmmaking. Even in the most tragic and shocking moments lead actress Liv Lisa Fries retains a certain sense of rigour and humility, rendering Hilde’s story not just meaningful but even sublime, especially in the face of a world of war.
