What does a woman do when no one is watching? This is one of the many ideas explored by Lilith Kraxner and Milena Czernovsky’s previous film, their precise, liberating debut BEATRIX. In their new film BLUISH, the directorial duo continues their exploration of the relationship between the body and the space or objects around it, finely attuned to the nuances of diffuse moods and fleeting emotion. The observation of two women’s daily lives coalesces into the elliptical portrait of two characters living parallel lives. Between boredom and melancholy, these two heroines live in a state of suspension, seeking connection with others. Like the bluish water of the pool, where one of them spends her hours, their emotions are fluid, and an overriding sense of alienation is flecked with brief moments of affection. Recalling Chantal Akerman or Angela Schanelec’s PLÄTZE IN STÄDTEN, the filmmakers put women’s bodies front and centre, giving them the space and time to simply exist. Their unshowy gaze emancipates these bodies from any kind of dictates. The film’s measured pace and hypnotic music, the meticulous 4:3 framings shot on 16mm and the minimal dialogue, turn the bodies and faces of the protagonists into emotional maps. (Nepheli Gambade)
