Viennale 2013 in retrospect

The festival closing gala at Gartenbaukino was the place to be in Vienna for tribute star Will Ferrell to receive standing ovations prior to the screening of ANCHORMAN. The final high point following this event was the film LOCKE by Steven Knight. Thus the Viennale 2013 drawed to a close with a rise in attendance from 96.900 he previous year to 97.400.
116 sold out shows from a total of 356 and the brisk popularity of the diverse special programs are a cause for joy.

Especially favored were the specials WILD ETHNOGRAPHY – THE WORK OF SENSORY ETHNOGRAPHY LAB, ASIAN DELIGHTS as well as THE RAW AND THE BOILED. Among the highlights were the Austrian premiere LE DERNIER DES INJUSTES in the presence of Claude Lanzmann, the gala evening for and with Jackie Stewart as well as the serial OUT 1 – NOLI ME TANGERE by Jacques Rivette in attendance of Nouvelle Vague legend Jean-Pierre Léaud. The Jerry Lewis retrospective, still running and lasting until November 24, as once more an evidence for the successful collaboration with the Austrian Film Musem.

Also this year outstanding filmic works were awarded:
PARADIES: LIEBE (D/F/A 2012) by Ulrich Seidl was awarded the Wiener Filmpreis in the category feature film and SICKFUCKPEOPLE (A/Ukraine 2012) by Juri Rechinsky in the category documentary.
