Hoch über einer idyllischen rumänischen Landschaft thront ein Monument aus kommunistischer Zeit: eine Flamme? ein Flügel? Ein Bildhauer klettert mit einer Frau aus dem Kulturministerium die Treppen hinauf, denn er versucht Geld für seine Vision zu lukrieren: ein Denkmal zur Erinnerung an die Matrosen des Panzerkreuzers Potemkin, die 1905 Asyl suchten. Mit gewohnt hintersinnigem Witz und Anspielungen auf die nationale Kultur verhandelt Radu Jude einmal mehr große historische Themen – das Verhältnis Rumäniens zu Russland, vielfach gebrochen. Another of Radu Jude’s fascinating impromptu history lessons. This time, the tireless director mixes fiction and video essay to look at the story behind the Russian battleship Potemkin, famous also for its depiction in Eisenstein’s film, and how the revolutionary mutineers sought asylum in Constanţa. The protagonists, a sculptor who wants to build a monument to the sailors and a doubtful official from the Ministry of Culture, discuss and thus reveal the conglomerate of our times: confusion, absurdity, idealism and a lost sense for what is right and what is wrong.
