Der Film wirft einen Panoramablick auf Geschichte und Gegenwart Brasiliens: Unter Verwendung von historischen Stichen, Fotografien und Tableaux vivants wird in einem mehrstimmigen Arrangement das Verhältnis von Kolonialisten und Kolonisierten, von Arm und Reich, von Talmi-Exotismus und repressiver Gewalt untersucht. „Urban Solutions“ – urbane Lösungen als kompliziertes politisches Vexierspiel, das in letzter Konsequenz undurchdringlich bleibt. This essay film offers a critical geography of Brazil, showing how capitalism and political paranoia have produced a security state, where the upper and middle classes go to ever greater lengths to protect themselves against the perceived threat of the urban poor. But this fortification relies on the working class itself, brought on as doormen and security guards expected to defend private property against the have-nots. As a refrain, we hear from a European landscape painter who tries to “civilize” the Brazilian jungle through strict visual classification. In this way, the film examines two different but interconnected histories of control. (Michael Sicinski)
