Invitation to a discussion at the Viennale headquarters in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation
"People in Europe do not rule out the possibility of war." This is the alarming conclusion of a study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. The film ATLANTIS presents a vision of the devastating consequences of a war in Europe. How can we prevent such scenarios?
Participating in the discussion are director Valentyn Vasyanovych, Reinhard Krumm (FES), Stephanie Liechtenstein, and Walter Ötsch, moderated by Renata Schmidtkunz.
On October 15, the Viennale 2019 press briefing took place in the presence of City Councillor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler. To open the 57th Viennale we’ve chosen one of the most outstanding films of this year. It is a work that – like the story it tells – is marked by passion and freedom and whose historical background has a retroactive effect on our present. PORTRAIT DE LA JEUNE FILLE EN FEU uses the intensity of a love story to bring urgency to the search for personal destiny and independence. The director, Céline Sciamma, gives us a work of simple elegance in which every shot, every scene, every sequence is right and necessary – as it is in love.

The Viennale has managed to procure Lucrecia Martel, a great director of world cinema, to produce its traditional festival trailer. With only four feature films in sixteen years, the filmmaker, who was born in Salta, Argentina, has created a small but impressive oeuvre that establishes her status as one of the most important representatives of contemporary cinema. Her works are highly independent contributions to the history of film. Interpretable in many ways and endlessly appealing, they try to capture the complexity of human existence in the seemingly banal.

The Viennale is happy to announce that the contract of director Eva Sangiorgi has been renewed for another five years. The decision was made by the Viennale’s board of trustees in accordance with Vienna’s City Councillor for Cultural Affairs, Veronica Kaup-Hasler. Eva Sangiorgi, director of the Viennale since March 2018, has been entrusted with the artistic responsibility for the festival until March 2026.

Few people outside the film industry are familiar with the name Eric Pleskow, but millions of people know the movies that he co-created: ROCKY, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, ANNIE HALL, MISSISSIPPI BURNING, AMADEUS, DANCES WITH WOLVES, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and many others. As president of the American film studios United Artists and Orion Pictures Corporation, Pleskow’s decisions had a crucial impact on the history of film in the second half of the 20th century.
