Following the death of our director of many years, Hans Hurch, the Viennale board of trustees has entrusted Franz Schwartz, the former director of Vienna’s Stadtkino, with the interim artistic direction of the Viennale.
Franz Schwartz has already started work and will remain in charge until the appointment of a new permanent director at the beginning of next year.

“VIENNALE METEORITE” AWARDED TO WERNER HERZOG
New Viennale prize presented to the legendary filmmaker and former director of the festival.
During his stay in Vienna, filmmaker Werner Herzog received the “VIENNALE METEORITE” from Viennale director Hans Hurch at the opening of his major retrospective at the Metro Kinokulturhaus. Herzog is the third recipient of this award, which was established in 2016 and consists of a real meteorite. Before Herzog, the prize had already been awarded to American filmmaker Jem Cohen and the renowned musician Patti Smith.
“The ‘VIENNALE METEORITE’ is not a new film award in the narrow sense,” said Viennale director Hans Hurch, “but rather a gesture of gratitude and recognition for a personality who has been connected to the festival in a special and unique way.”
Werner Herzog, who served as Viennale director in 1991 and 1992, gave the festival a number of new impulses during his tenure and attracted considerable international attention. Herzog himself described the VIENNALE METEORITE as “the award that pleases me more than any other prize I have ever received.”
