The Church of Satan was founded in 1966, and define themselves as “the first above-ground organisation in history openly dedicated to the acceptance of Man’s true nature—that of a carnal beast, living in a cosmos that is indifferent to our existence”. REALM OF SATAN explores this organisation through a series of portraits of its members. Some hew close to everyday life, others draw on fiction to approach the supernatural, making use of various visual and poetic effects. Some focus on an individual, others are communal. Some are musical, others silent. Some delve into the criminal, others reveal a most particular sense of justice. These portraits bear a certain resemblance to the earliest silent films, recovering those vintage forms to depict a belief that wasn’t organised in the same way during cinema’s emergence. Satanists are their own gods, and this aspect of satanism is explored through its most sensual aspect: the aesthetic approach to existence, devoted to a particular beauty of things. Ravishing black costumes, eccentric make-up, rooms filled with salient detail, ornamental chalices, and bubbling beverages inhabit this film, made with the collaboration of many high priests and priestesses. In Lucile Prost’s first feature FARIO, the question of where to live leads to an even bigger one: how to live? Léo, a young engineer, returns from his Berlin life to his hometown in rural France. He is determined to sell his share of his father’s farm but, once there, both the textures of the life he left behind and the old struggles of the land begin to rub against each other. A big mining company is pushing farmers to sell, and the agricultural community is resisting. Léo’s father’s old life might be foreign to him, but not to those around him: his mother, a young sibling, a cousin who took over the farm, old loves and friends. Slowly but steadily, grief about his father’s suicide begins to overtake him in unfamiliar ways, which seep into the film as visions, hallucinations and obsessions that also seem to reference the silent pollution trickling from the mine into the river. Is what we’re seeing real? Should hallucinated feelings not be taken seriously? The film examines a small community in danger in order to consider youth, aging and mourning, and how they are all intertwined with the contemporary treatment—or mistreatment—of the land. It is also a summer film: youth, beauty, friendship and love included. (Lucía Salas)

Returning to several of the great filmmaker’s lifelong concerns (language, music, art and, of course, cinema), Jean-Luc Godard’s SCÉNARIOS is sufused with a fixation on images of death. The film was completed the week of his passing, and it feels appropriate that a filmmaker so endlessly curious about life would be similarly fascinated by whatever follows it. Having famously declared that a film must have a beginning, middle and end, if not necessarily in that order, one imagines he may have felt similarly about life itself, or at least his own.
