Slet 1988

„Slet“, das waren in Jugoslawien die patriotischen Massenaufführungen zum Tag der Jugend, „Slet 1988“ war der letzte seiner Art. Schon im Zerfall begriffen, wagt der Staat etwas Neues: Statt gesichtsloser Massenchoreografie tanzt eine Solistin im Zentrum. Popivoda setzt die teils verfremdeten Videoaufnahmen des Ereignisses mit Bild, Ton und Schrift in historische und aktuelle Kontexte und destilliert daraus den ikonischen Moment, in dem eine Vergangenheit endete, mehr aber noch eine Zukunft. Nach den Kriegen dann blieb „a future forever wounded“ zurück. (Barbara Kronsfoth)

Do you recall the days when mass choreographies praised “artists who believed in the new”? Powerful footage from Yugoslavia’s final socialist youth festivities forms the core of Marta Popivoda’s new film, bursting into tightly composed views from the modernist housing blocks of New Belgrade. Three decades later, prima ballerina Sonja Vukejic still practices in a gymnasium while a teenager at the window suggests a fleeting incarnation of the thoughts of a girl in the 1980s.
