Brute Force

Auf der Tonspur dröhnt und wabert es. Der Blick richtet sich in das Innere eines Forschungsreaktors. Das Voiceover spricht über die Transformation von Natur in Daten, von analog zu digital. Die abstrahierende Methode der Wissenschaft wird abgebildet in Rechenzentren und Supercomputern – sowie in Wasserverbrauch und Umweltzerstörung. Die alles andere als banale Frage, die BRUTE FORCE stellt: Ist eine aus Nullen und Einsen gebildete Oberfläche tatsächlich relevanter als die damit vermeintlich erfasste (und endlich geordnete) Wirklichkeit? Taking its title from a cyber security term (a hacking method used to gain access to user accounts), BRUTE FORCE explores the imbalance between complex technologies and the intellectual power of the individual at a time when humans seem to have lost connection with their own progress. The film is conspicuously without people. Filmed in a silicon mine, data centres and on a salt lake, a monotone voice reflects on the confusion between the real and the invented. The electronic sound mix injects a trembling, high-pitched atmosphere into this elegiac ballad. (Anna Katharina Laggner)
