The key to unlock Ignacio Agüero’s latest, unusually enigmatic documentary is provided early on, when the veteran Chilean director puts pen to paper, composing his first handwritten letter in a long time to an unknown recipient. He writes that he has nothing to say in particular, but that the images appear nonetheless, just like they do in this film. Some are from the present, others from the past, some show real life and others fiction; the transitions between them are often carefully smudged. They’re all connected though, less by voiceover or the other letters Agüero will write than by subject, motif, and mood, some of which already familiar from his previous work: a desire to understand the changes in Santiago, the things visible from a window, an interest in people’s everyday experiences, the roofs of the city and the mountains beyond, cinema itself, and a wistfulness, or even outright melancholy. While many of Agüero’s other films have been structured by conversation, including the ones that feature briefly here, this one feels more about the gaps between the words, about those who remain off-screen, about the same distances walked again and again, about wondering whether the titular Provincia Hill will yet be climbed. Even never itself is changed by time. (James Lattimer)
