The Newest Olds

Der Film ist eine psychogeografische Vermessung der kanadisch-US-amerikanischen Grenzregion Detroit-Windsor: Aufnahmen von Naturlandschaften an der südlichen Spitze von Pelee Island kollidieren mit Cityscapes der erodierenden Metropole Detroit, kippende Bilder und Farbeffekte durch Optical Printing schaffen eine desorientierende Atmosphäre. Die faszinierende Tonspur mit Offscreen-Nachrichtenstimmen, Field Recordings von Volksfesten und Techno-Fragmenten komplettiert eine dystopische Bestandsaufnahme zeitgenössischen urbanen Lebens. Conventional cinema, across all its forms, rests on this principle: when cutting or dissolving between two images, make them sufficiently different so as not to jolt the spectator. Pablo Mazzolo aims instead for a cinema of perturbation: each “fluctuating image” (as he calls it) is an amalgam of tiny, optical differences in light, colour and shape. Vision is at once static and animated. The subject of THE NEWEST OLDS emerges slowly: an experimental portrait of Detroit near the US/Canada border, in which views of nature and cityscapes are fed by snatches of agitated, suspicious, warring voices.
