Devil's Peak

Hongkong, das ist in diesem Film auf Speed ein Bilderstrudel aus Alltag, Menschen und urbaner Landschaft, aus Bewegung, Farben und einem kontrapunktisch pulsenden Soundtrack. Doch wie lange vermag sich dieser fantastische Stadtmoloch zu halten? Gegen China protestierende Massen treffen auf gepanzerte Fahrzeuge und eine hochgerüstete Polizei. Barrikaden, Brände, verwaiste Regenschirme bebildern ein Satzfragment, das uns in der Mitte des Films vor abstrakt rasenden Neonlichtwirbeln unvermittelt trifft: „Hongkong suffers“. Simon Liu’s associative celluloid explorations of his home town of Hong Kong have always contained a certain eeriness, but DEVIL’S PEAK pushes forward into the realm of the full uncanny: dark corridors, disembodied voices, a moon that dances manically in the night sky, fires burning on streets and in empty buildings, police in riot gear. It’s hard to pin down just where the mood Liu weaves around the city’s mass protests is located in time: the very real fear of untoward happenings in that strange, shifting present or the premonition of a future that has now already arrived; a city symphony where time itself becomes unstable.
