The Newest Olds

Conventional cinema, across all its forms, rests on this principle: when cutting or dissolving between two images, make them sufficiently different so as not to jolt the spectator. Pablo Mazzolo aims instead for a cinema of perturbation: each “fluctuating image” (as he calls it) is an amalgam of tiny, optical differences in light, colour and shape. Vision is at once static and animated. The subject of THE NEWEST OLDS emerges slowly: an experimental portrait of Detroit near the US/Canada border, in which views of nature and cityscapes are fed by snatches of agitated, suspicious, warring voices.
