L' Île aux oiseaux

Mit seinen hängenden Schultern ähnelt der nach langer Krankheit als Helfer einer schweizerischen Vogelrettungsstation angelernte Antonin einer der vom Himmel gefallenen Eulen. In den realen Arbeitsalltag und die kreatürliche Präsenz der dort versorgten Patienten eingelassen: die von ihm selbst erzählte Fabel seiner allmählichen Genesung. Auch der Kauz wird wieder fliegen. Im Abspann erfährt man, dass alle Figuren sich selbst spielen. Aber was heißt hier schon „spielen“? Grenzgängerisches „Slow Cinema“ in einer ganz eigenen, somnambulen Atmosphäre zwischen Volieren und hautnahen Operationen mit mehr als nur einer Referenz an Robert Bressons schreibenden Landpfarrer. Filmmakers Sergio da Costa and Maya Kosa garnered attention for their debut feature RIO CORGO and are now back with their new film L’ÎLE AUX OISEAUX, a melancholic parable of salvation and a portrait of our times. After a long period of isolation, Antonin, a young man suffering from persistent exhaustion, rediscovers the world at a rehabilitation center for birds. In this strange place, wounded birds and troubled souls cohabit, lulled by the ubiquitous sounds of airplanes. Brilliantly built on a mix of documentary and fiction, the film is entirely set at a bird shelter and keeps the number of characters to a minimum to focus on non-actor Antonin Ivanidze, who was brought to the film to play the main character. The duo craft a journey via his singular physical appearance but also through his thoughts and voiceover. Presenting day-to-day situations, often accompanied by the use of religious classical music, the film creates a mirroring concept and unfolds into an elegant and enigmatic story of solitude that embraces a certain feeling to film a world disappearing. (Gustavo Beck)
