Filmmakers Sergio da Costa and Maya Kosa garnered attention for their debut feature RIO CORGO and are now back with their new film L’ÎLE AUX OISEAUX, a melancholic parable of salvation and a portrait of our times. After a long period of isolation, Antonin, a young man suffering from persistent exhaustion, rediscovers the world at a rehabilitation center for birds. In this strange place, wounded birds and troubled souls cohabit, lulled by the ubiquitous sounds of airplanes. Brilliantly built on a mix of documentary and fiction, the film is entirely set at a bird shelter and keeps the number of characters to a minimum to focus on non-actor Antonin Ivanidze, who was brought to the film to play the main character. The duo craft a journey via his singular physical appearance but also through his thoughts and voiceover. Presenting day-to-day situations, often accompanied by the use of religious classical music, the film creates a mirroring concept and unfolds into an elegant and enigmatic story of solitude that embraces a certain feeling to film a world disappearing.
