Hrvoji, Look at You From the Tower

Wie man Spuren von Identität finden könnte in einer Region verlassener Orte, in jener immer noch kriegsversehrten Region „Ex-Jugoslawiens“, damit beschäftigt sich dieser hochkomplexe Film. Mit einem beachtlichen Arsenal filmischer Mittel, – erstaunliche Perspektiven, überraschende Übergänge, gespenstische Handkamera-Impressionen – und mit diversen Zugängen – von Satanismus zu Rockmusik zu Amateurarchäologie – öffnet sich ein halluzinierter Erinnerungsraum: zwischen Generationen und zwischen verwandelten Staatsgebilden. Ferko’s latest was shot during his travels through the former Yugoslavia. He organizes the material through shape, beginning with a tall rock monolith that becomes a literal touchstone for vertical forms throughout the film. We also see wide shots of movement through fields – guys playing football, birds in the sky. These compositional structures alternate with broken interiors and shafts of light. A film that bears traces of both Robert Beavers and Cy Twombly, this is a work that feels so exacting that even the hand-held trembling of the image seems to bolster its overall formal agenda.
