Ferko’s latest was shot during his travels through the former Yugoslavia. He organizes the material through shape, beginning with a tall rock monolith that becomes a literal touchstone for vertical forms throughout the film. We also see wide shots of movement through fields – guys playing football, birds in the sky. These compositional structures alternate with broken interiors and shafts of light. A film that bears traces of both Robert Beavers and Cy Twombly, this is a work that feels so exacting that even the hand-held trembling of the image seems to bolster its overall formal agenda.
