Cien niños esperando un tren

Was ist ein Film, wie kommen die Bilder auf die Leinwand? Wenige Jahre vor dem Ende der Pinochet-Diktatur begleitet Agüero einen der legendären Filmworkshops von Alicia Vega für Kinder aus den vernachlässigten Vororten von Santiago. Freimütig erzählen die jungen Cineasten, dass die einzigen ihnen bekannten Aufnahmegeräte jene der Geheimpolizei sind, mit denen sie und ihre Eltern zuhause ausspioniert werden. Ein ungemein zugewandtes Zeitdokument, das neben Nostalgie für die Epoche der analogen Laufilder auch einen Blick auf die widersprüchliche – hier emanzipatorische – Rolle katholischer Organisationen im Kampf um die Rückkehr zur Demokratie ermöglicht. Ignacio Agüero’s remarkable documentary begins as a tender portrait of film historian, educator and activist Alicia Vega (b.1931) teaching a workshop on early film history to impoverished youth living on the outskirts of Santiago. Gradually the film transforms into a devastating critique of the Pinochet regime, as it shifts to focus on the families of Vega’s young students. Agüero visits their cramped quarters in touching scenes that reveal his compassionate understanding of the home as a poignant expression of its denizens’ deepest aspirations and vulnerabilities. Censors struggled to explain why they absurdly restricted CIEN NIÑOS ESPERANDO UN TREN to viewers over the age of twenty-one. To do so would have meant articulating precisely what Agüero’s film and Vega’s workshop clearly and courageously expose: the dictatorship’s cruelly deliberate stratification of class through poverty and lack of education. Yet CIEN NIÑOS ESPERANDO UN TREN is also a movingly optimistic film that ofers cinema—both Agüero’s own and the “films” made of paper and glue by the children—as a means to attain the knowledge and perspective that can lead to a freedom otherwise unattainable.
