Wie das so ist, John Smith zu sein, vor allem aber wie es ist, John Smith zu heißen, davon erzählt der mittlerweile 71-jährige Avantgarde-Filmemacher, und zwar fabelhaft. Mit seinem John-Smith-typischen, staubtrockenen Witz berichtet er von mangelndem Selbstbewusstsein, Namensänderungswünschen und Peinlichkeiten, zieht in Texttafeln eine zweifelnde Metaebene ein und reflektiert über Karriere und Krankheit. Insofern BEING JOHN SMITH dazu anregt, über die eigene Existenz auf Erden nachzudenken, besitzt der Film eine geradezu universale Wirkmacht. (Roman Scheiber)

The moniker in question could hardly be more common: John Smith, which the director shares with 30,000 others in the UK alone.
