A Black Screen Too

Quasi eine Fortführung von BLACK RECTANGLE, der 2013 den Verfall des kunstgeschichtlich markanten, wenn nicht ikonischen Gemäldes „Schwarzes Quadrat“ von Kasimir Malewitsch paraphrasierte. Es ist ein kompaktes Feuerwerk der Transformation, eine verkratzt flackernde Explosion der Formen, wobei Vermette – erneut eine Art Hommage an den Meister mit ihrer eigenen, 16mm-Found-Footage-Obsession vermählend – weder mit Farben herrlichster Schattierungen noch mit Vierecken aller Art geizt. Nur zu Beginn und am Ende regiert die Düsternis. Watch your eyes! (Roman Scheiber)

Following her critically acclaimed first feature STE. ANNE (2021), experimental filmmaker Rhayne Vermette returns to animation with this delightfully immersive and hypnotic work. Here we are invited to enter a translucent cinematic realm which swings between the mythical and the material. Constructed as a temporal collage, A BLACK SCREEN TOO gives us space to reflect on the ways our eyes see as well as the ways our minds process abstraction. (Hyun Jin Cho)
