Far Away
Fragments of daily life and female protagonists enjoy a long tradition in the cinema of Angela Schanelec. In her student short film, she shows a woman interacting with different people in the city. Her observations touch on the laconic and the comedic. Schanelec’s choice of subject or protagonist never feels like a political statement. She never imposes an idea on the people in front of the camera or even those watching her films. Her cinema is one of genuine interest and curiosity instead, a cinema that interacts with what it finds, just like the woman in this short. (Patrick Holzapfel)
