SEKALLI LE MEOKGO

Setting Sekalli le Meokgo in the majestic mountains of Lesotho, the young South African director Teboho Mahlatsi has chosen to make a film that is both a fable and an imaginative exploration of the living power of magic in African culture, a story of unrequited love, suffused with both the cruelty and beauty of African magic. From a new, emerging generation of African film-makers, Mahlatsi was co-creator and director of the very successful, controversial and ground-breaking TV series Yizo Yizo. That series focused on the world of young black people in Johannesburg and the township schools, but here challenged by the commission from New Crowned Hope and the youthful inspiration of Italian westerns he has re-told a traditional story of a renegade stickfighter with a magical accordion who tries to save a beautiful woman turned into a slave zombie by an evil witchdoctor.

Geboren in Südarfrika. Abschluss an der African Culture Centre's Film School. 1999 realisiert er mit Portrait of a Young Man Drowning seinen ersten Kurzfilm, der beim Filmfestival von Venedig prämiert wird. Schreibt und dreht den Dokumentarfilm Ghetto Diaries. Sekalli le Meokgo (2006) ist sein jüngster Film.
