The Indonesian director Garin Nugroho, already known for the inventive diversity of his story-telling styles and for his courage in tackling controversial subjects has, with Opera Jawa, created what might be his most eye-opening film. Celebrating traditional forms of gamelan music, dance and performances, he has interwoven these with modern styles of song and dance and combined them with locations transformed by modern installation artists. In the process he has created a new form of musical, an «opera» for the 21st Century. Appropriately it will open the series of New Crowned Hope film screenings.
