SANG SATTAWAT
SYNDROMS AND A CENTURY
Perhaps no Asian director has so sensitively - and so mysteriously - captured the enchantments of daily living and envisioned the continuing vitality of magical and spirit presences in that daily life as has the young Thai director, Apichatpong Weerasethakul. In his last film Tropical Malady, which won the Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, he revealed a close understanding of the almost musical rhythms of film and of story telling and of the magical as a presence in cinema. His newest film Sang Sattawat is no less mysterious and enchanting and no less musical, but this time Apichatpong is delicately exploring memory, the magic of memory, how we remember and the memory of his parents.
