A milestone in film history. The reception of which has changed dramatically over the years: Back in 1930ies it was celebrated as the first Soviet sound film and as international success (audience award winner of the first film festival in Venice), for later generations the film presented itself as a story of blind idealization of labor camps and the instrumentalisation of the secret service. Then again one may admire the authenticity of the faces and the feeling for their rebellious temperament.
