General’naja linija / Staroe i novoe

It probably takes an Eisenstein to transform a subject like "industrialization of agriculture by collectivization" into a highly emotional film. Here the fat chin of the great land owner and there the work-marked hands of the farmer Marfa! Here the orthodox procession with its false promises, and there the real miracles of a skimming machine, from which the milk just flows! And combine harvesters! In the end, the farmer Marfa laughs with rouged lips as a brisk driver, with a dramatic effect in perfectly framed pictures; everything Eisenstein-like.
