Drums Along the Mohawk

John Ford
USA 1939

V'14

At the time of the revolutionary wars, the American nation just founded, the young married couple Martin and other colonists try to establish an existence in the wilderness of Mohawk Valley. Over and over again they are attacked by the British Tories and their Indian allies – their land ravaged, their houses destroyed - however, they won’t surrender. After many victims news from the capitulation of the British troops reaches them. The cavalry brings the flag of the union with 13 stripes and 13 stars, the flag of the unity and the independence, and marks with it the end of an, from Ford’s view, essential American moment.
