In this melodrama and expressionistic parable Henry Fonda plays a prosecuted priest in a dictatorial country. Religion is forbidden, as is alcohol, because both take away control from the regime over the people. The film by catholic Ford delivers beside the apotheosis of the Christian religion a document against totalitarian exercise of power and the suppression walking along with it.
