Ever since LA VIE APRÈS LA MORT, Creton has turned his house into an echo chamber of the world, a shelter for testing a utopian counter-society of care, humility and gentleness. It’s by taking care of the children that the adults learn to live with their wounds and their wishes. It’s by watching the adults live that the children learn to interweave life and death. This fabric has never included as many nuances and contrasts as in this BEL ÉTÉ that, from the eponymous story by Pavese, has only kept crudeness and lucidity without any naïveté. Whether cynics like it or not, everything in it is true, everything has been lived, experienced in real life before being reinvented for cinema. Without any discourse or slogans, LE BEL ÉTÉ practices the most concrete policy possible: through the example of a way of living, of shared risky existences, in a spirit of openness to encounters and adventures.
