DAILY: Day 12, October 28, 2024

BesucherInnen vor dem Gartenbaukino,

In our VIENNALE DAILIES you'll find everything you need to know about what's happening around the festival!

For me, the question was: How am I participating? Am I taking a gun, am I taking a camera or am I taking the suitcase of somebody who is crossing the border?

FILMTIPS FOR TODAY

THE SHROUDS
David Cronenberg | Canada, France2024 | 119 min | OV

Monday, October 28, 1.00 pm: GARTENBAUKINO

“Tell me about this body thing,” says one of the characters in THE SHROUDS to the film’s protagonist Karsh (Vincent Cassel), a widower pummelled by grief and the owner of GraveTech, a company that supplies the living with a direct video link to the corpses of their dearly departed as they rot in the ground. Like no other director, David Cronenberg has been telling us about “this body thing” for some fifty years now. In films that plunge into the squish and ick of the flesh, he draws close to where soft meat meets the hard gleam of technology. THE SHROUDS extends this obsession with aplomb, mingling piercing insight with humour in its depiction of a Toronto replete with sex and death, paranoia and sabotage, flirty AI assistants and chilling “shroud-cams”. The geopolitics of cybersecurity lurk in the background of it all, but the kind of connectivity with which THE SHROUDS is most concerned has little to do with fibre-optic networks. This is a film about the human need for love and touch in the face of finitude, one in which the pleasures of genre are inseparable from philosophical weight. (Erika Balsom)

Sinfonia da necrópole
Juliana Rojas | Brasil 2024 | 85 min | OV w/EN subtitles

Monday, October 28,  11.00 pm: STADTKINO IM KÜNSTLERHAUS

Deodato (Eduardo Gomes) is a hypersensitive gravedigger’s apprentice entirely unsuited for the job. Afraid of the slightest touch, he wanders through the film, writing secret poems on the back of medical bills and caressing an abandoned church organ. His life gets more complicated when Jaqueline (Luciana Paes), who works for an undertaker’s firm, is sent to the cemetery to enact some changes: to track down and remove abandoned tombs and prepare the terrain for modern graves that are stacked up high. She arrives on a shiny motorbike, wearing leather and brandishing her badge like a cool detective, ready to shake tombs down and break a few hearts. He obviously falls for her. Opposites attract, yes, and together they are doomed to fail, yes, but in this case, Deodato’s heartbreak is the film’s triumph. SINFONIA DA NECRÓPOLE is a musical comedy that transfigures a graveyard into a site of lyrical resistance. Against the skyline of a city where not even the dead can rest, a swarm of kind words, warm gestures, great gags and smooth dance moves flutters and flies. Maybe São Paulo is the real graveyard; outside the necropolis, everyone already seems dead inside. (Victor Guimarães)

Vidéolettres Robert Kramer / Stephen Dwoskin
Stephen Dwoskin, Robert Kramer | France, UK 1991 | 100 min | eOV w/FR subtitles

Monday,October 28, 11.00 am: FILMMUSEUM
Thursday, November 21, 6.00 pm: FILMMMUSEUM

Between February and June 1991, Robert Kramer and Stephen Dwoskin sent seven video letters to each other—four by Kramer, three by Dwoskin, all of them shot on Hi8. Two Americans living in diaspora, one in England, one dividing his time between Berlin, Normandy and Paris. Kramer’s letters are explorations in which a direct line runs between the eyes and ears (the body) and their immediate surroundings. George Bush Sr.’s sermons about the Second Gulf War that enter Kramer’s Berlin work space from the TV screen; the banks of the Landwehr Canal, where Rosa Luxemburg was murdered in 1919; Kramer’s house on the Seine. Kramer: “The video letters to Steve—that was great. I don’t remember how we started to do it. It was in the shadow of BERLIN 10/90. I like this idea of shooting in the camera. All my letters are shot on direct. What you see is what was shot. The sound is in that period of time. Both of us like it very much.” (Volker Pantenburg)

Image of movie Una sombra oscilante

We invited filmmakers to share with us materials which are documenting the creation of their films and which, in one way or the other, were important in that process: images, paintings or newspaper articles, shotlists, script pages, notes, setphotos, storyboards, quotes, encounters, all kinds of inspirations.

Chilean director Celeste Rojas Mugica sent us some of the photos that will forever remind her of the fascinating, emotional, challenging working process on her film ... read more HERE!
