Manita del Monte is a feared, merciless and cruel Narco Lord. He hires an exploited, yet ambitious young lawyer to help him to live the new life he so desires. And thus Emilia Pérez is born. Emilia is strong, affluent, longing for affection and determined to use her power to repair Manita’s sins. Yet love and desire are impossible to leave behind and Emilia will eventually have to face her past. Set in Mexico and acted by such luminaries as Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascon, Zoë Saldaña and Adriana Paz, who shared the award for Best Actress in Cannes, EMILIA PÉREZ is one of the most original and highly awaited films of the season. Our heroines’ adventures unfold before the landscape of a country that Jacques Audiard depicts with the greatest care and respect, bringing political and social issues to the big screen through the prism of song and melodrama. Damian Jalet’s choreographies are crafted with such an eye for detail and control of mise-en-scène that they produce a feeling of constant, freewheeling amazement. And Audiard demonstrates his virtuoso approach to classical film once again, rethinking and reconfiguring genre to offer up a splendidly cinematic spectacle of love and courage. (Rebecca De Pas)
