MUL-AN-E-SEO
Hong Sangsoo | South Korea 2023 | 61 min | OV w/ GER subtitles

Sunday, October 29: 3.45 pm - Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus
A young director and his two collaborators arrive on the touristy island of Jeju to shoot a low budget film seemingly without a script. As they wait for an idea to take shape, they scout banal locations, rehearse simple scenes and share meals together, mostly junk food. Standing on a cold and windy cliff one day, the director notices a woman clearing the beach of the trash tourists have thrown there, leading him to think about the lonely, Sisyphean task of living within a consumerist society in full awareness of the fact. The idea of an underworld, populated by the ghosts repressed by our way of life, discreetly starts to form in our minds. In this film about the making of a film, everything happens not so differently from how we imagine Hong Sangsoo himself works. But the true novelty of his 29th feature and its obvious distinguishing feature is that it is shot almost entirely out-of-focus, to comic and indeterminate effect. Hong never provides a clear explanation for this choice. But one recalls a line from IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE, where the protagonist, in the final months of her life, expresses the desire to live in absolute clarity: an impossible ideal that is also the false promise of our digital world. EL ECO
Tatiana Huezo | Germany, Mexico 2023 | 102 min | OV w/ EN subtitles

Sunday, October 29: 11.00 pm - Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus

El Eco is a locality of just 100 souls in the state of Puebla, less than 200 kilometres east of Mexico City. Tatiana Huezo’s film of the same name sees her return to her roots as she delves into the daily contingencies of this tiny rural town. Unfolding amidst the idyllic landscape surrounding the village—exquisitely shot by Ernesto Pardo—the individual narratives overlap and mingle with classic bucolic motifs: dreamy-eyed Monse longs for adventure as she cares for her grandmother; a young couple struggles to reconcile the husband’s jobs in a nearby city and the needs of parenting; meanwhile, their children play, ask questions, grow...
The film is primarily a sensorial account woven together in a form akin to a musical composition: a pastorale privileging texture, harmony and timbre over any clear dramaturgy; the various stories flow unassumingly, giving subtle structure to the overall cadence of this tapestry of light, colour and sound. There is an obvious tinge of fabrication to the documentary—in that sense, EL ECO ultimately demonstrates a possible way for Mexican cinema to depict its own countryside with compassion, fluidity and openness, in firm opposition to cruelty and sensationalism. La Maison Nucingen

LA MAISON NUCINGEN
Raúl Ruiz | Chile, France, Romania 2008 | 98 min | OV w/ EN subtitles

Sunday, October 29: 11.00 am - Filmmuseum

At a card game night, a man wins a villa on the edge of the Cordilleras, which he then visits for the first time with his wife. From the very beginning, an eerie, surreal mood hangs over this trip, a ghost appears along the way and the highly neurotic permanent tenants welcome the couple with ambiguous offers. They are monarchists who speak only in the language (French) of the old Viennese court, not the only haunting feature here. "Austrians are all crazy," is said once, and this is particularly true of the boarding house guests, who haunt and drive each other mad in unison with the ghosts of the past. (Robert Weixlbaumer)

The new Romanian radicalism, this is how one could describe the works of Radu Jude. In brilliant combinations of narrative techniques, historical and literary allusions, absurd jokes and, most recently, the ubiquitous presence of TikTok, Jude analyzes economic colonialism, the communist past and the neoliberal present. A conversation about screenwriting and his style, which he describes himself as a "Bucharest architectural style." Moderation: Roger Koza.
