Geboren in Tokio. SUGITA arbeitete als Regieassistent für Filme unter der Regie von Kiyoshi KUROSAWA, Shinji AOYAMA, Nobuhiro SUWA und anderen. Sein dritter Spielfilm, "Haruharasan's Recorder" (2021), wurde auf dem FID Marseille (Grand Prix, The Best Acting Preis, Publikumspreis), dem Internationalen Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg (Rainer Werner Fassbinder Award Special Mention), San Sebastian International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, Sao Paulo International Film Festival Festival, Viennale, Internationales Filmfestival von Belfort, Internationales Filmfestival von Göteborg Festival, FICUNAM gezeigt. "Following the Sound" (2023) ist sein vierter Zukunftsfilm, wurde bei den Giornate degli Autori uraufgeführt und wird auf dem Busan International Film Festival und dem Tokyo International Film Festival gezeigt.
