Vor der Tonkulisse hinfließenden Wassers lauscht eine junge Frau über Kopfhörer einer Kassette und schließt die Augen. Die Vorgeschichte, die so dem Film als Prolog vorangeht, bleibt unausgesprochen. Nur in Andeutungen, Blicken, Gesten ist Harus Trauer über den Verlust ihrer Mutter erahnbar. Ihre Begegnungen und leisen Versuche der Selbstvergewisserung sind bestimmt von ihrem empathischen Blick auf die Menschen. Die zarte Atmosphäre diskreten Mitfühlens, die der Film setzt, fordert Gleiches von uns ein. Nur so verstehen wir, welche Kraft der Befreiung aus tief eingewurzelter Verletztheit am Ende in der langen Umarmung für Haru verborgen ist. (Barbara Kronsfoth)

Two years after HARUHARASAN NO UTA, Sugita Kiyoshi’s latest film continues his exquisitely uncluttered exploration of generosity, healing after loss and human bonds. Haru, a young woman who works in a bookstore, meets first Yukiko and then Tsuyoshi and begins to spend time with these two lonely characters. Perhaps their encounters didn’t happen entirely by chance, although this is mere assumption, as the film elides any explicit mention of their pasts. The story develops unobtrusively, following the quiet flow of everyday life; the focus remains firmly on the subtle observation of the ordinary and the search for the fragile beauty of the present, often embodied in the kindness and comfort written on the face of Haru, magnificently embodied by Ogawa An. The stillness and discreet distance of the framings create a serene, sheltered space that allows our imagination to connect to these characters’ inner lives. Mental images and the characters’ connections to one other are further evoked by the sound, presented as enigmatic recordings of Haru’s late mother, that the former listens to on cassette. A sparse, poetic study of the solace to be found in shared moments, KANATA NO UTA reveals that even the simplest of things have lustre and depth. (Nepheli Gambade)
