Pure Reason

Viel gibt die kanadische Filmemacherin über ihr Experiment nicht preis: ein Stück Wand, hand geschriebene Notizen, Farbcodes. In sieben Sequenzen führt Bohdanowicz durch wechselnde Farbräume und erkundet, wie Licht und Zeit sie ver ändern. Gedreht auf abgelaufenem 16mm-Material, nimmt der Experimentalfilm die geometrischen Abstraktionen Jaan Poldaas’ zum Ausgangspunkt. Ferne Stimmen, das Klicken eines Diaprojektors und Stefana Fratilas Soundtrack begleiten dieses unheimlich schöne, hypnotische Erlebnis. (Leonie Markovics)

“I have planted some 200 lettuce plants. Now I am making broth and writing to you,” wrote poet Zofia Bohdanowiczowa in a letter to Józef Wittlin. Decades later, her great-granddaughter Sofia Bohdanowicz writes down exposure details and her movements inside a house and behind a Bolex: times, objects, songs playing, food prepared or eaten. PURE REASON taps into the variations of perception and experience explored in the work of Jaan Poldaas: a few colours he worked with become a way of sifting through the city and the home in order to examine how we live, see and hear.
