They’re Here

Es klingt wie ein Satz aus einem Horrorfilm: „They’re here.“ Doch wenn maskierte Einsatzkräfte der US-Einwanderungsbehörde ICE das verschneite Minneapolis mit Razzien überziehen, wirkt die Bedro hung der Menschen ganz real. In ihrem beklemmen den Filmdokument stehen Poitras und Mueller klar an der Seite der Bewohner:innen, welche allmählich lernen, die Bewegungen der Agenten zu tracken, War nungen weiterzugeben und Gefährdeten zu helfen. Ein Film als Gegenbild zur dystopischen Normali sierung staatlicher Gewaltexzesse, als Ausdruck von Widerstand und Solidarität. (Roman Scheiber)

Timely hardly seems sufficient a word for Laura Poitras and Rachel Lauren Mueller’s essential short, which documents local attempts to resist ICE in the sub-zero temperatures of a wintry Minneapolis: lengthy pursuits by car and conversation with those hiding in the trunk, confrontations on the street and billowing clouds of nerve gas, a vast database of local sightings that opens out to capture the entire country. If THEY’RE HERE shows a resistance organised with formidable precision, the true horror is what this conveys about the sheer scale of the threat. (James Lattimer)
