Das Kino müsse doch die Leute zusammenbringen, statt sie als bloße Konsumexistenzen anzusprechen, doziert der in Österreich lebende Regisseur altmeisterlich beim familiären Dreh in der russischen Provinz im Gespräch mit seinem Cousin. Der wiederum glaubt, dass hinter den Startschwierigkeiten seiner Schrottkarre ein geheimnisvolles Gas steckt, das irgendwo im Ort austritt. Film im Film und schelmische Pastorale in Schwarzweiß mit philosophierenden Verwandten am Lagerfeuer, die auch noch das Casting übernehmen – für eine Weile erfindet sich ein verschlafenes Dorf neu, fiktionalisiert sich mit sichtlichem Vergnügen und wird mit Haut und Haaren: Kino. “I hope you will not disgrace our fatherland”, says a woman in the Russian village of Jutanovka when she learns a guy from Austria has arrived to shoot a movie there. In fact, Aleksey Lapin is a Russian guy from Vienna. He knows the area, he became a filmmaker, and now he wants to make “a historical film” based on recollections from his relatives. But first he has to do a casting.
Word travels fast and people show up who would like to act in Lapin’s film. But “Krai” (which means something like edge or margin) never becomes a “real” movie, the proper production of a narrative film. Instead the seemingly quite random casting process turns out to be more or less the film itself already: a very laidback portrait of a remote Russian village in summer, shot in an almost jubilant black and white, with remarkable deep focus compositions. Jutanovka sometimes gets literally cut off from the modern world, meaning candles have to help in the absence of electricity. Small tasks like putting up new wallpaper point towards improvement, but the shocking transformations of the 1990s are still on people’s minds. Aleksey Lapin has not disgraced, but rather honored his fatherland with a beautiful movie: one of true cinema. (Bert Rebhandl)
