Der Bergmann Elder ist nach La Paz gereist, um gegen den Verlust seiner Arbeit zu demonstrieren. Dort versucht er, mit einem Hilfsjob auf dem Markt über die Runden zu kommen. Als er Symptome einer seltsamen Krankheit entwickelt, vermittelt ihn eine gutherzige Alte an einen bizzaren Eigenbrötler, der vielleicht ein Schamane ist. Dem zauberischen Reiz des vorliegenden filmischen Wunderwerks werden diese dürren Sätze nicht gerecht. Russo nähert sich Stadt, Stoff und Leuten mit der Vertraulichkeit des Dokumentaristen und überhöht das gewonnene Material sodann mit künstlerischen Mitteln zu einer mystischen Erzählung am Rande des Fantastischen. At once a hallucinogenic trip, a spiritual tour, and a metaphysical journey, EL GRAN MOVIMIENTO is a cinematic experience in the truest sense of the word. A film within a film consisting of two separate stories that connect in unusual ways, the new movie by the Bolivian director of VIEJO CALAVERA centers on a pair of characters as a way of narrating La Paz and its surroundings. The aerial views and the images captured from the cable car that connects the city with El Alto show it as an infernal cauldron of people, sounds, and colors, with tall, newly constructed buildings coexisting with dark wastelands and abandoned areas. Closer shots reveal a hectic city and a market full of people constantly on the move: street sales and union demands, crowded buses honking, dodging cars and people. Russo’s camera creates a vital symphony of urban decadence, full of economic contrasts, to tell the story of Elder, a sick man who is looking for work but seems consumed by the city and its weird powers, and Max, a healer and con-man who may or not help him get better. But most of all, this is a film about a city full of fury, but also of mystery and a lysergic kind of magic. (Diego Lerer)
