Hochwald

Eine weißhaarige Perücke mit Korkenzieherlocken geistert durch diesen Film. Mario, der zwar schon sehr jung Vater geworden ist, aber noch zu Hause wohnt und sich mit verschiedenen Jobs das Geld für sein Heroin verdient, setzt sie zum ersten Mal im Auto seines besten Freundes Lenz auf. Der ist für Weihnachten in das Bergdorf oberhalb von Bozen zurückgekehrt, will aber nach den Feiertagen nach Rom, um Schauspieler zu werden. Auch Lenz wird sich die Perücke aufsetzen, aber sie wird ihm kein Glück bringen. Für Mario wird sie zu einer Art Talisman, der ihm immer wieder in die Hände fällt und ihm hilft, sich selbst näherzukommen. (Ferdinand Keller)

The northern Italian autonomous province of South Tyrol is a fairly particular region: bilingual due to its historical ties to the Austrian Tyrol, the people there speak a strong German dialect, but sound pretty formal when speaking in Italian. Young Mario is a character on the brink. He might want to go to Vienna, or to Rome, following in the footsteps of his childhood friend Lenz, who became an actor. Lenz returns to their native town Hochwald (Bosco Alto) to celebrate Christmas, and finds himself once again in a state of painfully inhibited intimacy with Mario. Neither of them is really ready to come out to the traditionally-minded townsfolk, or even towards each other. After a radical plot twist, Mario finds himself all alone in his village again among people who expect him to finally blend in: a former junkie and flamboyant dancer who is supposed get rid of the carnival wig he likes to wear as a sign of his waywardness.
Evi Romen makes brilliant use of the mountain scenery in her audacious queering of classical Heimatfilm tropes. Ricky Shayne and Salvatore Adamo make for pointed additions to a clever soundtrack. (Bert Rebhandl)
