The Fist

Es war ein Zeichen für das gerade unabhängig gewordene Nigeria, als 1962 in Ikeja an der Peripherie von Lagos die erste Guinness-Brauerei außerhalb Großbritanniens und Irlands eröffnet wurde. Akingbade hat in diesem Gebäude, das auch eine Ikone der industriellen Modernisierung ist, mit 35mm-Material einen beziehungsreichen Dokumentarfilm gedreht: Nichts wird ausdrücklich gemacht, aber jedes Detail ist lesbar auf viele Bedeutungsebenen hin. Postkolonialität ist häufig skeptisch gegenüber der Moderne, in THE FIST wird dieses Verhältnis spannend neu gedacht. (Bert Rebhandl)

As Harun Farocki once wrote, “Whenever possible, films quickly moved away from factories. The ‘factory’ theme didn’t attract cinema, it repulsed it”. THE FIST breaks with this aversion and plunges us into the daily operation of a beer factory in Nigeria. Industrial, repetitive tasks are portrayed in 35mm with rigorous framings and naturalistic soundscapes. Instead of words of protest or obvious diagnosis, capitalism just continues undisturbed, made tangible in inescapable gestures and monotonous choreographies of humans and machines.
