We are delighted to announce the opening and closing films of this year’s Viennale. For the first time, two Austrian productions will bookend the festival, which takes place from October 22 to November 3.
The 64th Viennale will open on Thursday, October 22, with FOREVER…FOREVER by Austrian filmmaker Johann Lurf. The 21-minute film will be screened in 70mm at the Gartenbaukino and continues the tradition of Austria’s exceptionally vibrant short and experimental filmmaking scene, which has long been an important source of inspiration for international cinema. With this special choice of opening film, the Viennale deliberately brings this cinematic form into the spotlight. Musician Dorian Concept will enrich the evening with his irresistible, eclectic virtuosity.

The Viennale is delighted to present its 2026 festival trailer, created this year by American filmmaker Kelly Reichardt.
Kelly Reichardt has a long-standing relationship with the Viennale. Numerous films of hers have been screened at the festival, and in 2020, the Viennale dedicated its own publication, TEXTUR #2, to her work. Most recently, her film THE MASTERMIND was featured in the 2025 programme – and this very film also provides a link to this year’s Viennale trailer.

In just under eight weeks, the 64th Viennale will kick off with its opening gala at the Gartenbaukino! A first preview of this year’s festival programme was presented today at our traditional summer press conference at the Volksgarten Pavillon.
