Egomania - Insel ohne Hoffnung

Caspar David Friedrich trifft Nosferatu. Oder (so eine Inhaltsangabe): „Dr. Faustus im Eis, eine deutsche Geschichte über den Verfall der Zivilisation in der Tradition der Nibelungen.“ Oder: Christoph Schlingensief ist verliebt in Tilda Swinton und filmt sie, sehr eifersüchtig, in ultramelodramatischen Settings mit Udo Kier. Er selbst bezeichnete EGOMANIA als seinen „wahrscheinlich romantischsten und schönsten Film. So betrügen kann man sich nur einmal.“ Schon der Titel deutet an: Ein sehr persönliches Werk, wie so oft bei großen Kunstwerken definiert sich hier aber jede Ahnung von Nähe durch Distanz.

“Tilda Swinton for a short while was Schlingensief’s muse and passion. She was known then for her performances in the films of Derek Jarman. And it was with and for Swinton, that he made EGOMANIA, a post-Apocalyptic Romantic tone poem about loss photographed under glorious Caspar David Friedrich skies. Shot on a small island, with a small cast and crew, EGOMANIA was improvised according to the vagaries of the weather and the spectacular natural panoramas the team would come upon each day. Dr. Faustus in eternal ice: “While EGOMANIA is among Schlingensief’s most deliberately ugly and offensive films, it stands out as unexpectedly beautiful with its seemingly mythological series of scenes, images, and characters. The film shows an unconscious struggle between creative and destructive forces on an island in the Baltic Sea where peace and joy have been replaced by hopelessness and discord.
