A Correspondence
Was sehen wir eigentlich, wenn ein Bild sich nicht festlegen lassen will? Stimmen, Schatten, Licht, Texturen, Räume, Landschaft, Textinserts und flüchtige Fragmente treten gleichsam miteinander in Beziehung – und entziehen sich doch einer deutlichen Lesart. Irgendwo zwischen Erinnerung und Gegenwart scheint der Film herumzugeistern. „I’m talking to you with what is left of me”, sagt die Lyrikerin Barbara Guest auf der Tonspur. Die Kor respondenz des Titels ist wohl auch die zwischen Bild und Betrachter:in; Leerstellen gilt es selbst zu füllen. (Roman Scheiber)

The title of Ben Balcom and Josh Weissbach’s collaborative film can have a few different meanings. The film may be regarded as a series of notes and letters between the two filmmakers. Or it could refer to the method by which its various fragments are assembled into a meaningful whole. Surfaces, textures and spaces are joined through a loose, intuitive montage that permits the pieces to hover around each other like atomic particles. Onscreen texts and verbal phrases tease the viewer with the promise of explanation but ultimately add to the overall mystery. (Michael Sicinski)
