ROIS ET REINE
KINGS AND QUEEN
At the center of the film is Nora, a thirty-five-year-old woman who has a son from an earlier marriage and works in an art gallery. Her life takes a disturbing turn when she is forced to confront her fathers worsening illness, which prompts painful memories of her first husband and the birth of her son. At the same time, an entirely different story appears: police and hospital officials take a man in his mid-thirties into medical custody, very much against his will. Dishevelled and unruly Ismaël denies he needs help, but his erratic behaviour has led someone to demand his incarceration. Slowly for Desplechin is too subtle a director to make his points glaringly obvious these two narrative threads are brought together. Rois et reine is one of Desplechins most ambitious films, for it allows him to explore how the past intrudes in the present and how relationships head in unexpected directions. We are constantly surprised by the narrative and where it takes us. (Piers Handling)
