In Ford’s ironically treated romantic fairy tale the former box champion Sean Thornton comes back traumatized from the United States to the Irish village of his fathers. Though he wins the heart of red-haired Mary Kate Danaher, she refuses to go along with him because he does not want to fight with her brother for her dowry. The crude-cheerful comedy with weird old men and pigheaded fellows populating the village orientates itself on Shakespeare’s «The Taming of the Shrew» - a movie as a matter of importance for Irish-born John Ford.
